Gaila.

Does she have a last name? What ship was she on?

Memory-Alpha doesn't list a secondary name, and it says that there is no production information on which ship she boarded. I'll have to watch the cadet assignment scene again, but I thought she was on the Farragut with Uhura (hence the smile and thumbs up, but I could just be reading that wrong). The argument that Kirk thought she was on the Enterprise because of the apology cut-scene is valid, but I just can't think this late at night.

I have no clue! And they never do give her a last name. I always kinda interpreted that scene with the thumbs up as Uhura being annoyed that Gaila got the Enterprise and she didn't, but your interpretation is valid too.

Oh, I never thought of that. *bites lip* But I have a really great scene in my head and it only works if she's dead.... So there will be author's note. Or not. Ooooooohhhhh, I could leave it up the reader to decide if she's dead or not. Mwahahaha!

It honestly shocked me when I started reading fic that every presumed she was assigned to the Farragut because that makes Uhura a horrible friend/roommate! She glares at Gaila!

But her death seems to be common fandom majority, so take it as you will.

I always saw it as more of "Oh, you've got to be kidding me. The Farragut?" disgusted look in overjoyed Gaila's general direction.

She's so dead for me. It's sad because she seems to be my muse right now.

Most things I've read have either assumed Gaila was on the Farragut and either died or got onto a rescue shuttle miraculously. I've also read a lot where she's on the Enterprise, but the author usually says that they're AUing a bit to keep her alive.

Yeah, the rescue shuttles kind of irk me in a scientific "OMG it's a BLACK HOLE!" way.

Which is why it is a very good thing that I can turn off that little science brain when watching entertainment shows.
